It was a week of two halves, Brian...

This week has definitley seemed to be a bit of a split one. Work has been pretty horrid - just far too busy, impossible to prioritise work because it's coming in faster than you can look at it, never mind organise it - but outside of work it has been a week of good times.

That pub quiz being a case in point. Pub Quiz Man has been voluntarily in retirement for about 18 months or so; he used to have a regular fixture on a Monday night, along with a large and ever-changing selection of team mates, but then after months of coming so very close he eventually claimed victory one evening and found it a strangely deflating experience. So he decided to give it a rest for a while, and instead saved up his enormous amounts of pointless trivia for friendly quizzes and games with mates. But then various of these mates started to suggest it was high time Pub Quiz Man returned to reclaim his crown, and so last Monday he assembled a posse and headed for the local to whoop the competition.

Well, that was the plan. Sadly, most of the posse either forgot or made some pathetic excuses, and finally it was just PQM and one assistant who made it to their date with destiny. Still, it's about quality, not quantity, and all that, and Pub Quiz Man and his new assistant Knowledge Girl achieved an impressive run. The local pub quiz is run in six rounds, with a winner from each round plus two randomly chosen wild card entries making it through to a shorter final round. Between them PQM and KG nailed one of the music rounds and scored an impressive five out of six in the final. Of course, some even cleverer types had gone and got six, so PQM left with the bitter taste of defeat in his mouth (that, and the cider he'd finished up after KG had decided she didn't like it. PQM wasn't too impressed with it either). So now the fire has been rekindled, and PQM is retired no more; tomorrow night he, KG and anyone else they can persuade, will be aiming for a famous victory, or at least a narrow defeat in a good-natured contest.

What other happenings this week, then? Well, our cell group had a mostly social evening involving copious amounts of chocolate fondue; the youth group had a get together on Friday, which was really good as usual; and today I've been out for coffee with some friends at a ludicrously priced coffee chain whose name is an anagram of "Stabruck's", where we were at least given free mince pies and Christmas goodie bags full of coffee and chocolates and stuff.

Oh, and I've got a new toy. Which you'll see before too long, once I've worked out how to work it properly.

So another busy week is in prospect now, and I'm hoping work will calm down a bit in the run-up to Christmas, although we thought it would calm down by the end of October and it never really did, so I'm not expecting too much this time around either. But I'm really looking forward to it too. And so is Pub Quiz Man.
