For quite some time now, my mother has been suffering ill health which has concerned all of us in the family. I saw her on Sunday and she was looking and sounding worse than I'd seen her for a long time. She's 87 years old and prone to spontaneously dropping off to sleep without notice. I've got used to this, but on Sunday, she suddenly fell asleep while she was in the middle of a sentence, which really freaked me out.
Early this afternoon, I received a phone call from my eldest sister telling me that mum had been rushed into hospital. The call came while I was in the middle of the road teaching a pupil how to reverse park, so it was hard to take the news in while at the same time attempting to ensure the safety of my pupil and others on the road.
It seems that mum has suffered heart failure and is to be kept in at hospital for at least a week. This evening I spoke to sister no.2 who also happens to be a nurse. It seems that the hospital staff got on the case immediately and have been treating her with all the right medication and have also removed about 2 1/2 litres of fluid. Since then, she has apparently really perked up. Apparently, when the hospital offered her a sandwich, her response was "is that all there is?" which proves she's obviously feeling better.
I've not been in myself yet, as too many visitors at once would be a bit overwhelming. I'll be going in tomorrow as I work very close to the hospital where she is whereas all three of my sisters are scattered all over the place.
I know she's in really good hands and right now is in the best place, but it's still a worrying time for all of us.
