Autumn 2001: I finally pull my finger out

Throughout the suumer, Tina & I had contacted each other from time to time, but as time went on, we were contacting each other more and more frequently. We had emailed, texted, chatted in "The Cafe", the Ship of Fools live chat area and once or twice, even spoken on the phone. Soon, our email exchanges were happening every day.

It was about time I pulled my finger out and arranged to meet. Yes, I know we'd already met at shipmeets, but that's not what I mean. It was about time we met properly, just the two of us, nobody else. If I remember rightly, it was Tina who actually instigated it. She dropped a a few very subtle hints that she was coming to London for the day. Well, about as subtle as a herd of elephants running through a glassware shop anyway. We arranged to meet for lunch.

I knew a nice place in Southwark, so I suggested meeting outside London Bridge Station. When I arrived, I initially thought I'd been stood up as I waited at the agreed place for nearly half an hour. Just as I was thinking about either going home, or making my way to a nearby pub, my mobile rang. It was Tina. When I arranged to meet at London Bridge, it hadn't occurred to me to say which entrance we should meet at. She was waiting at the entrance at the other end of the station, presumably assuming that I'd stood her up!

We met, we had lunch. We talked about all sorts of things. After lunch, we had a wander around St Katherine's Dock and then went for a walk along the river. What I particularly remember was that all this time, the hymn "All for Jesus" was going round and round in my head. (Are you paying attention? I may be setting a test later on!)

The following weekend, we had a return match in Cambridge. It seems that we had become a couple. Months passed. My car could find its own way up and down the M11. Just at that time things were perfect.

For the time being at least...
