Switch off the engine please, that's the end of the test...

"...and I'm very pleased to inform you that you've passed!"

Words I've been waiting to hear for a very long time. Three years after getting the notion in my head that I wouldn't mind working as a Driving Instructor, and then two years after buggering it up completely, meaning a long wait before I could re-take the test, this morning I drove to Tolworth, shaking like a leaf, to embark yet again on the road to Instructing.

The test went like a dream. Everything that could have possibly gone right did so, and anything that could possibly have gone wrong, didn't. In fact, the examiner complimented me on my "very good display of driving". He said it more than once, which makes me feel even better.

So, what happens now? Well, I can now apply for my "PDI" licence which means I am allowed to work as an instructor under supervision. How long that takes, I'm not sure. While being totally elated at the whole thing, I'm also aware that, in reality, I'm only two-thirds of the way there. I have to take one more exam to qualify for the "green badge", the full ADI qualification which I gather is pretty tough, but who cares? Today, I passed part 2 which is reckoned to be the second most difficult driving test there is. The most difficult test is the one that the Examiners have to do. They are allowed a maximum of two faults in thair test. How many faults did I accrue this morning? Yes, you've guessed it - TWO - that's all, just two faults. The same number that potential examiners are allowed!

I think a beer or two in celebration might just be in order this evening. As it happens, there is a Shipmeet in London, which I was already planning to attend, so I'll go anyway and probably bore evryone withe every minute detail of todays test.
