Oh dear, I am unfit! After our splash into the world of aquafit yesterday, M and I decided to go and try out the one local pool we'd never been to before and have a quick swim. It's a lovely pool with a retractable glass roof so that you get the feeling it's an outdoor pool even when the roof is on... and more importantly it's warm!
We deliberately only put 1 hour on the parking ticket, just to be on the safe side... and it was just as well. Ten lengths and I'd had it. (I could boast and say M was worse than me because she only managed 8, but then she's 75 and has arthritis in the hip) And what do you know, the cafe was shut too. Disaster! My legs are now protesting that twice in one week was totally unreasonable and refusing to do any more exercise until I repent.
I hope Tiddles is happy. While at the pool I've signed him up for some intensive stroke-improvement swimming lessons to help him get over his difficult with butterfly, and as a reward for doing it, some snorkelling lessons. I think he'll be delighted. I don't think Smudgelet will be delighted, mind, at having to go along and sit through them without an incentive for him. hmmm..... maybe this way he'll learn that life just isn't fair, which is a good grounding for later life.
I am delighted to announce that I was able to get Smudgelet exactly what he wanted for his birthday. A scooter - a big grown-up one (big enough for Grandad to ride!). It's identical to his brother's but a different colour, which is ideal. He's definitely outgrown his Action Man three-wheeler. It's hidden at Dad's at the moment. It'll be fun wrapping it. Mind you, before then I really am going to have to test-ride it, aren't I? Just to make sure it's all right.
Monday night is the moment we've been waiting a whole year for. Tiddles is to be invested into Scouts at long last - a reward for overcoming his tantrums. Today I proudly went and bought him his new uniform. And very nice it looks too. I can't wait to see him try it on tonight. I did get the giggles when I discovered that the "small" size would absolutely drown him and he needs "XXS". Poor little squirt. I gave a pair of trousers that he's just outgrown to Smudgelet and they're too tight for him!
Progress with school - I had a long talk with a lovely lady at Occupational Health and she was extremely supportive, to say nothing of extremely understanding of why I wanted to save my sanity by going part time. She said that the school were wrong in implying that I had to be 100% fit to work part time and added that after any long period of time off work OH would advise part time for at least a month to ease you in gradually. A month would take me to the end of term near enough, keep me on full salary, and then I could drop to the pre-arranged part time timetable in September with no further ado. She has requested a referral from the school (which they should actually already have done) and is going to contact me for an interview next week. Hooray!
I am in disgrace with my father for organising for someone to come and cut the lawn tomorrow. How dare I do such a thing with my own money and my own lawn? He'll forgive me eventually, I guess. As a statement of independance he has worn himself out this morning mowing his own lawns front and back. My lawn has looked absolutely lovely with all sorts of wild flowers growing amongst the willowy grass, but I think it's time we did something to make it look a little more presentable as it's getting a bit out of hand. And it might motivate me to weed the borders.
Smudgelet's seedlings have been slugged, by the way. We are going to replace them with fully-flowering marigold plants and see whether he notices!
