I knew he wouldn't like it. On principle. There again, he's really too "young" for a retirement home but what do you do? I need to know he's safe when I go away and I need to have some respite. And he needs to have something to do outside the home and some company during the day. I found myself praying "Lord, let him have a good day" and then thinking that I trust God to make it good but that I don't trust Dad to appreciate that! Still, I remembered again just how much I love him (well, both of them, for that matter!) and it was lovely to see him cheer up over tea with me and Smudgelet. And actually, in many ways, it was good to know that he wasn't going to give in and be an "old man" without a fight. And what do you reckon? By the time he went home to bed he'd about decided to give it another go.

If nothing else, he's sort of made friends with a couple of ladies from up the road who've invited him round to play cards with them. Typical! ;)

It was almost inevitable that Tiddles would have a tantrum tonight. He had a massive headache through overtiredness last night and, as it kept him awake half the night, he was even more overtired tonight. And, of course, it'll be the same again tomorrow night as it was half past eight before he condescended to stop his strop and go to bed. He's not talking to me, though, because I had the audacity to question the whereabouts of his £30 games bag, £25 football boots, £5 trainers, £10 rugby shirt (all lost on separate occasions and surreptitiously covered up) and the entire contents of his pencil case which his teacher rang me at home to complain about today. And to think he still has the bruise on his forehead from the last lot of head-banging. Sadly we have come to the conclusion that he just isn't ready to do the Scouts night hike this weekend. A disappointment to both of us, but there's always next year. I just hope he can cope with the school trip next June. Seven days of ten o'clock bedtimes and action-packed days (several long-distance hikes and climbing one of the peaks) just does not bode well at all! Still, at least his performance this evening gave me some serious quality time with the Smudgelet! :)
