The street was cold, dark and silent, the inhabitants all asleep or settled down in front of their televisions, oblivious to the world outside. Just at one darkened window did the curtain twitch from time to time in a silent vigil over the street below. Nothing but the sound of a fox barking at a magpie in the hedgerow to disturb the slumber of the locals.
Suddenly the soft purr of a motor was heard as the dim headlights of a car struggled to pierce the darkness. Little more was visible, the darkened car and the woman at the wheel barely visible in the nighttime air. But the silent watcher knew they were there for this was who they were waiting for. With no word to the sleeping children in the house, she slipped out and down the path towards the car where a woman, dressed in a thick black coat, was emerging from the front seat, glancing around in enquiry.
"You got the drugs?" The question was quiet and to the point. The woman from the car reached into the voluminous pocket of her coat and handed the watcher a small brown paper bag. The contents were checked and the bag then placed in a pocket.
"Oh, thank goodness for that. Of all the tablets for Dad to forget to bring home from the Hospice, this was the one which he really couldn't do without. Thank you for making a special journey after work to come to the rescue!"
