So here we are at the beginning of Lent.
I'm not one of those people who regularly gives something up for Lent, although I have occasionally used it as a "specified length of time" more selfishly to help me try to give up sugar in my coffee, or to go without cakes or chocolate - not for the real purpose of Lent, though. I have sometimes tried to take something up for Lent - reading my Bible more thoroughly, for example.
This year, however, is going to be quite a challenge. I have decided to give up reading and posting on the Ship of Fools, apart from one read and one post per day. This will be interesting - when should I read, when and what should I post? I will not visit other websites either - except here to record my progress for my own benefit, Fish.co.uk to start off my Bible reading and thinking, and any sites I need to use with the Smudgelets for homeowork. I will, though, be able to get my fix of adult company and support through the cafe and MSN - and a little Bible Study group a few of us are starting for Lent.
So far this morning I have read Psalm 63 in preparation for tonight's study. I'd read it before, but this time with far more thought and far more slowly. It prompted me on to read properly the story of David and Absalom as I realised I didn't know the story in full. It has started thoughts playing through my mind which will probably be with me all day. The Fish.co.uk Bible reading was the one about storing up treasures in Heaven instead of on earth, and that seemed to reinforce my thinking about the whole Lenten business too.
Side effect from this is sponsership from Shipmates - if I manage to go the whole of Lent without giving in to the temptation to post on the ship, then this should raise well over £500 for cancer charities. Another good reason to keep going with it.
Not going on the ship this morning also reminded me that I had some work to finish and send in to school. That stopped me being irritated with myself this afternoon when I found the info I needed was stuck on the computer at home!!!!
Right, off to work now - hope it goes as smoothly as yesterday, if not more so. At least I haven't got break duty today!
