Yesterday morning I was awoken at 6.30am by my hotel travel agent, she was waking me up for my tour. Had yoghurt and fruit for my complimentary breakfast.
First stop on my tour, the floating markets:
Then a handicrafts centre:
(this wood carving took 9 months to make!)
Then a Thai cultural show at the Rose Garden:
And finally a stop off at the World's Largest Jewelry store which had the most amazing pieces and I may have bought myself a little something...
When I got back to my hotel at about 6.00pm, I called my boyfriend and then ventured out on the street to buy some dinner. I decided that now was the best time to try some of the street vendors due to this logic: I had just finished my full day tour and didn't have any others planned AND if I got food poisoning I had two full days to recover before I caught my flight. With that in mind, for the equivalent of $5 I bought:
Coconut milk (in coconut)
Water
Jackfruit
Black sticky rice with Banana
Pork Sausage on a stick
And.....
When in rome' to as the romans' do....
Worm things (yes, real worms but on second inspection, could be caterpillars) with one grasshopper and one cicada looking thing (so that I could taste the vendor's selection).
With a bottle of water in one hand, I am sitting here in the safety of my hotel room sizing up my little packet of insects:
Be brave....
Pretend you're on Survivor...
Quite good, very crunchy, like eating chips. Might go back for seconds later.
Not as keen on this one, a bit like seaweed in taste and also very crunchy.
In goes the cicada looking thing...
I had to spit this one out, it had very unpleasant tasting mushy insides.
2 out of 3 ain't bad.
Meeting up with my new Thai friend tomorrow (the one who ambushed me while I was going into my hotel last night) who is going to escort me to the Chatuchak markets (it spreads over 35 acres and encompasses about 15,000 stalls). Bring on the shopping!
