My grandfather's funeral was yesterday. As it happens, I woke up at 5am (the equivalent time that it would have been in Australia). I joined in the service in spirit.
We have a tradition in my very musical family to sing songs at big family events (weddings, significant birthdays etc) and this was the first time that the family has had to do it for a funeral. It is set to the music of a famous hymn and this was the first verse:
To Pa(*) from whom this family flows
In us your wit and spirit grows
We sing this final song for you
To celebrate your life and you
(* name of my Grandfather)
In one way, I feel really lucky, that at 23, I have been able to know all of my grandparents for this long. In another way, it makes it more difficult. It also seems quite surreal because I am such a long way away from my family and therefore not with the people that are grieving like I am.
Please continue to keep my family in your prayers and thoughts. Thanks.
