Happy (belated) Birthday to me..... My birthday was two weeks ago and mostly involved trying to make sure we caught one of the four buses a week that went to Lindisfarne Castle. Luckily the place we were staying the night before did a fantastic breakfast so I was a happy bunny on that account. The boy cooked me a great dinner once we had reached our 19th century stone cottage where we stayed for the next 2 weeks.
The small (1 x 1 and a bit miles) tidal island where Lindisfarne is situated is a beautiful place with a cute little village, an old Priory, the Castle and lots of nature and scenic walks. It was impossible to get fresh food on the island so, as you can imagine, internet was scarce and therefore blog updates were too.
As part of our volunteering, we were room stewards in the castle which mostly involved answering questions from the tourists. I often stood in as house steward on the front desk, greeting people and selling postcards.
Once we had seen the main sites that the island had to offer, things to do on the island were pretty scarce, particularly when the tide was in (and therefore the causeway to the mainland was closed) so we got through a whole series of Qi and I finished a 750 piece puzzle.
After all the travel it was actually nice to base ourselves in the same place for two weeks.
At the moment, we have a nice arrangement at Berwick Backpackers where we run the internet cafe for 4 hours on a weekday and we stay and eat for free. We are then off to stay with friends in Stirling for a week before I head back for a couple of weeks work at the Embassy in the Netherlands. After that, it's Ghana.
