Aren't libraries BRILLIANT? It's like, you go in, right, and there's computer terminals where you can log on to the internet, and reading rooms with loads of newspapers and magazines, so you can like, read ALL the papers. And then, right, there's just loads of .... books. And you can just hand over your card (which is FREE - amazing!) and take away all these books, and, you know, read them, and then! You just give them back, and you can take out some more, and they're still free! BRILLIANT!!!

Yup, I joined my local library recently, and have a lovely stack of detective novels for on-train relaxation, plus one or two hopefully more 'edifying' articles. Not that the local library is perfect - they seem to have very little pre-twentieth-century fiction, so it looks like I'll have to continue my browsing around the '£1 Classics' sections of bookshops (and then you get seduced by all the beautiful £5.99 Penguin Classics with nice art on the front, and copious scholarly notes inside). But James, if you're reading, yes my new local library is really good, and unlike another library in the Borough doesn't seem to have any drug dealers in the reading rooms.
