Happy New Year!

Thus the vicar greeted us this morning, and church-wise it is true. Unless, of course, you are Orthodox (in which case I believe you have a while longer to wait?) or from a tradition which doesn't recognise liturgical seasons (in which case you can pick a new year you like the sound of, or go with the conventional 1st January). I was indeed rather charmed to notice that, in true Ecclesiantics style, the notice sheets, which have been green ever since we started attending this church a couple of months ago, became mauve this morning (of course, the truly correct colour is violet, but that would give you a headache to read). We also, as is traditional, had an Advent Crown, with purple candles for those who prepared the way, the Patriarchs, Prophets and John the Baptist. Mary gets a girly pink candle (and this morning the vicar referred to it as pink, which shows that we are not what our former vicar used to call a 'tight-arsed Anglo-Catholic' church - the correct word is 'rose', apparently).

So, all in all it seems like a good time to start a new year. As my blog hints at, and Spike's blog makes more explicit, a lot has changed for us this year, mostly of the kind where when it happens you just think 'Humph! Could anything go right for us, ever?' but later on, good comes along, what was lost is replaced by something else good. Not that that means the bad things didn't suck, just that life goes on, and deals good things too, and I will stop here as I have said 'good' far too many times, and the phrase 'it's all good' is galloping alarmingly towards me.

Bonus quiz question for Brits of a surprisingly wide-ranging Certain Age: Every year, Blue Peter would show you how to make an Advent Crown. Apart from candles, you would need ????
