Stitched Up

Yesterday afternoon I had an 'almost-certainly-benign-but-we'll-send-it-off-to-be-biopsied-just-to-make-sure' lesion removed from my upper arm. It was my first experience of surgery, unless you count having my root canal done last year, and it was most weird feeling the prodding and the pulling of the thread, yet not feeling the scalpel slicing a chunk out of my flesh and the needle being poked in and out.

I now have a wound about an inch long, with four rather fetching blue stitches. The problem is, I am finding keeping a waterproof plaster over the area very difficult. Every time I move my arm, the plastic surround comes loose. It's about 29 hours since I had the excision done, and I'm on the third plaster. The adhesive failures of the dressing are heightened by the fact that you are recommended to keep the wound liberally covered with Vaseline, which has a kind of opposite-of-sticky effect. The current dressing is a very small amount of Vaseline, then a waterproof dressing, then two good old-fashioned fabric Elastoplasts holding the dressing in place by the edges. I'm hoping this will hold. I've also found by trial and error (ie swearing when you realise you're stuck and need help) that I can't fix the plasters myself, as putting them on one-handed is tricky and my left hand really won't reach my left upper arm. Thankfully Spike is a willing clinical assistant and not an 'ewww, I can't look at that' wuss. Still, if I'm talking about wussing, I have to admit that I kind of really wanted to watch the procedure being done, but opted to look away in case it made me sick.

Meanwhile, after a run of busy weekends we have an unexpected Saturday night and Sunday morning at home, due to a breakdown in communication (of the cock-up, not the conflict, variety). The story is really Spike's to tell, but I'll just say that I'm thinking of placing an ad on ebay:

Sermon for sale, Lent 2 Year C or would suit non-lectionary church or congregation who aren't paying attention, never preached, running time 10 mins approx, liberal-orthodox Anglo-Catholic tone, 3-point plus opening anecdote and closing exhortation, hermeneutics in good condition, one careful owner.
