Packing and slacking

After various rumours*, it was confirmed last week that we are moving offices from Fulham to Vauxhall. We were told to have all our stuff (desks are staying put, computers, files and desk contents are going) ready to go by 1pm today. I packed up all my desk stuff and my work files yesterday afternoon. It filled - two thirds of a crate. No really, most of my work is paperless - I type it and email it off, honestly ...

I had to go to the doctor's this morning, so arrived at w*rk at 10.45 and raced to finish the briefing I needed to do this morning. Aided by sterling work from my colleague T, I emailed it off to the necessary people at 1pm, shut down my computer (which had already been labelled with my name and desk number). I then went for lunch with a couple of mates from my last department. When I returned, my 'puter had been unplugged, so no more work could be done, but we had a seminar to attend. This was better than a lot I have been to - the presenter didn't seem out to blind us with how amazing the latest management reorganisation was going to be, and actually seemed to think the Daily Mail might not be the best guide to good crime management policy. The seminar finished soon after 3, leaving nothing to do but go home. Oh, did I mention that we received an email asking us to report for work at *11:30AM* tomorrow, or more precisely to report to the canteen for an update and building induction, as our computers probably won't be set up until at least mid-afternoon? It's a hard life being a public-sector research gopher. But hey, our team is dwindling, people keep sending us w*rk all of a sudden, and my boss is back from holiday on Monday ...

*Note to spell-check: this is an English blog, written by an English person, so no, it's not 'rumors'. I could understand 'rum oars' or 'rum hours', but what kind of suggestion is 'rum ours' for goodness sake?
