Computer still intermittently poorly, but at least I managed to burn all my files to CD before it died again.
And do not, unless you want a poke in the eye, say "do you have antivirus software?" and "how up to date is it?" and "when did you last run a virus scan?" The answers are "yes," "the latest version" and "as soon as I came home last night," respectively. And I ran a spyware scan as soon as the AV software had finished. And yes, my copy of Windows XP has all its current service updates. I am not a complete fool.
I suspect I have some sort of hardware problem, in which case, it's probably beyond me to fix it - I think it needs to go to the computer hospital.
