But it is terminal.
Yay - not to worry, I posted my post before I read your comment. I'd been hearing all day "oooh, that sounds like a virus, have you got antivirus software?" and it was driving me loopy. So far as I am aware, I don't have "technological moron" stamped on my forehead.
I was talking to The Nice IT Man At Work (we like him, he didn't ask me any questions about my anti-virus software, possibly because I had a slightly wild look in my eye by this point), and he sucked his teeth and said "how old is it?" and I said "six years old," and he said "oooh," and "you could try replacing the fan, because it sounds like the processor is overheating, but then you'd find that something else packed up, and you'd need to replace that, and then you'd need to update something else because 6-year old PCs trying to run modern hardware struggle a bit, and then I'm prepared to bet you that in six months something else will go, and frankly, you might as well bite the bullet and buy a new computer now." And I said "eeeep!" and "thank you," (because Rosamummy brung me up proper). And then I went to PC World, where the man behind the counter said much the same thing, and "well, you can bring it in if you like, but we'll charge you £70 just to take the back off and have a look, and then fixing it would be extra, and to be honest, just buy a new one." Drat and phooey.
Anyone have any helpful suggestions? (I take a lot of photos and could upgrade to 8MB conection to the interweb if I so choose).
