The Rosary is an extremely powerful intercessory prayer. So you might choose to pray it for a friend who is sick, or struggling with something. In which case, your intention for the rosary would be "for Fred, who is looking for a new job, that he may be guided on the right path, pray for him." Or something like that (I'm not very good at unscripted prayer)! And then as you were working through the prayers, part of your mind would be dwelling on Fred, as you hold his needs before God and ask Our Lady to take those needs to her Son. Or, if you've got a prayer list as long as your arm, you could have a new intention for each decade of the rosary, so you would pray a short intercessory prayer before each decade, taking those needs to Heaven.
