I need a thing. It plugs into the back of my work computer and turns a useless USB port into a rather handy serial port, essential for getting rid of payments electronically and saving me from having to write 60 cheques this week.

Being a good little girl, I phoned our IT support department.

IT procurement said "we need a request in writng, we have to do a comparison of four different suppliers, and then it's Christmas, and we can get it to you for probably mid-January, unless we arbitrarily decide there isn't a clear business need for it without actually asking you." (OK, they didn't say that last bit after the comma, but I know them of old).

Since I need the aforementioned £12 bit of kit this week in order to get rid of £2,000,000 of payments, and pay the rent in a couple of weeks, and so on and so forth, I thought "hah, I don't think so." I can't see any of my dear colleagues being understanding if I turn round and say "sorry, can't pay your expenses until 15th January." (Auditors. I never do a payment run the first week of the year, I'm too busy answering stupid questions).

As an aside, phoning me up on the 6th of December when you bill isn't due for payment until the 22nd will earn you exceedingly short shrift.
