The quest for a new winter coat is hereby declared a failure.

I need a new winter coat - my current coat, which is size 14, hangs like a badly put together sack on my size 10 frame.

I'd found this coat I really liked on M&S's website - long, dark brown, fitted, with a detachable fake fur collar. I'd also found £15 worth of gift vouchers during a FlyLady-inspired "15 minute de-clutter." Handy, taking a £110 coat down to £95.

I went to M&S on Oxford St in my lunch break today, thus reminding myself why I never buy anything in the sales - by the time I've negotiated all the dawdlers, little old ladies who've come Up West specially (why?!? The shops are identical to those found everywhere else in the entire country!), small children, people with suitcases (don't ask) and so on, my Will To Live has deserted me to chase after my Will To Shop, which is a fragile beast at the best of times, and runs away to hide under the bed at the slightest provocation.

Anyway, M&S on Oxford St only had this coat in black. "Odd," thinks me, "it's not in the sale or anything, but I can't see any brown ones."

Off I toddled to M&S at Marble Arch, (taking the Tube a whole two stops, because otherwise I would have killed someone for the crime of Walking Too Slowly And Getting In My Way, Come On, Shift Yourself, Some Of Us Are On Our Lunch Break, Just Because You've Got All the Time In The World Doesn't Mean Everyone Else Has, Will You Please Just Move, What Did You Stop There For, For Crying Out Loud?!?), and, eventually, found their winter coats section. They only had it in black, as well. "Ah well, since I'm here, I'll just try it on, I can get it on the website, and use my vouchers for something else." Tried on the size 10, it fitted beautifully and looked really nice. Tiny bit long, but 'tis ever thus with me and winter coats.

Went to the website, found the right coat, discovered that it isn't on there in brown any more, either.

That is very annoying. And I didn't like any of the other coats they had in brown. And cream or pale blue do not strike me as practical colours for a winter coat for me, travelling on the Tube as often as I do. And I don't want a black coat.
