is "always read the instructions!"

The sound had never worked on my new computer, even after dad had set everything up, connected the speakers, and so on. If I tried to play a CD, Windows Media Player would work, I'd get all the swirly patterns on the screen from the music, there was a light lit on one of the speakers indicating that they had power, but no sound came out.

Bit of a pain if you wanted to listen to music or watch a DVD or do something else requiring it to make noise.

I phoned the maker's support desk, and after assuring the man on the other end of the phone that "yes, the speakers are plugged into the speaker socket," "it sounds like a problem with the sound card," quoth he. "Send it back, we'll fix it."

Just as I was about to go to bed last night, having packed the PC away in the box, ready for collection today, I thought "I'll just have another look at the instructions, see if I'm missing something blindingly obvious." So I had another look at the instructions, and my thought process went roughly "Oooh. I've got that sound card, rather than this sound card. Hmm. That means I should have another set of speaker sockets that the speakers should be plugged into. Oh look, there they are. What happens if I do this?"

Billy Bragg suddenly starts blasting out of the speakers, that's what happens. Ahem.

Computer does not need to go back to the computer hospital, after all, and I've saved myself a "there's nothing wrong with your machine, but thanks for giving us all a good giggle" fee...
