The other extreme of emotions came on the way home when 10 mins out of London something hit and bounced off the window, and the train very suddenly braked and came to a stop. Then there was an announcement over the tannoy to say that we'd just hit a person, and it looked like it was a suicide, and there'd now be a very long wait while it was all sorted out.
We then had 5 hours of a combination of sitting on still trains, standing on very hot stuffy packed trains, sitting and standing on random platforms and changing trains. Having left London at 3.45, we eventually got back to Stroud at 9.15.
I did try to assure the boy who'd not been on a train before that day, that this kind of thing wasn't common!
