My random thought for the day

Why does it take 28 hours to travel from the UK to Australia (or however incredibly long it is)? Surely if you just went vertically upwards from the UK, hovvered there for 12 hours while the earth spun, and then went vertically back down again, you'd be there? When I asked this yesterday (which was when I thought of it - while riding to work!), someone pointed out that it might be because of the pull of gravity. In which case, how far 'out' would you need to go to be beyond that pull? Answers from clever people please, in 'idiot' language that even I can understand!! Thank you!
