Why choir?
:P to Bimble... I shall now add the rest of it! I sent that so I remembered!
What is the purpose of a church choir?
This question was prompted by hearing our church secretary (nothing to do with the choir) on the phone to the local newspaper (about something to do with this choir). In the conversation it came up that there are less people in the choir than there used to be.
But she said that she didn't think it was a good idea to say that we wanted new people to join the choir in the article they were writing, because "we don't just want good singers, we want people who want to worship God".
I have some problems with this on a personal level because I don't currently know what I believe, and I certainly don't sing "to worship God" (although I used to). I would also say that at least half of our current choir also don't.
However, I would like to think that I might be aiding others' in their worship. Is this enough? Or should a church choir be worshipping God themselves?
(Also to what extent should the choir lead the spoken parts too, that being part of the worship as well as the music.)
