...PC World were very helpful, but were not actually able to help fix the thing. In fact they (and a subseqent web search) seems to suggest that laptop screens are almost unfixable at any reasonable cost. Typical my warranty is 3 weeks expired... do you think they set a timer on them?
The only solution seems to be to get a cheap flat screen and plug it into the VGA port on the laptop. PC World showed me how to do this and it worked! I think they were hoping I would buy one there and then, but I didn't. If anyone has a spare flat screen let me know, otherwise PC World will be getting some of my money later today...
