...went to see American Dreamz at the Odeon after work yesterday, I know I should have been out in the sun really but it was my last chance to see this film. I was interested to see how you could get Hugh Grant, a suicide bomber, the American President, Pop Idol and comedy in one film. The answer is you can't, or certainly not comfortably. The bits centred around the President were brilliant, and the final of the Pop idol type contest was very good as well, but other than that it did not quite work. The humour was unpredictable (Political satire followed by slapstick, stereotypical view of Arabs, jumpy and bitty plotline). Grant was great, perfectly slimy and nasty (although somehow I felt sorry for him) and Mandy Moore looked great (of course).
It was the first time I had been to the Odeon for months and months, I had forgotten how soulless and rubbish it is there. the staff were rude (and far too many of them, all huddling around together ignoring the customers), the ticket was expensive (£6.85), and whereas in the Picturehouse £2 will get you a pint of nice local ale, or a bottle of Luscombe pure apple juice, in the Odeon you could only get a rubbish watery fruit drink (6% Juice), or something fizzy and brightly coloured.
