Went to a passover celebration at church yesterday evening. It was very well organised, with people from our sister church joining us.
The usual problem though - as soon as it was over and an announcement made for help in clearing up people headed for the door.
Those few words "could people help..." make people leave a building quicker than if a fire alarm went off.
People did help - the same ones who do so after every event. The reliable few who want to come in to a service the next day and find the church clean and tidy with the chairs set out.
We did leave some things in the kitchen until this morning, but when the announcement came for assistance those words had their magic effect.
One day I'll suggest we leave it - let food rot; coffee cups go mouldy; the toilets remain unflushed.
Then again - it will still be those gallant few who will clear it whilst those that run away complain about the state the church has been left in.
