just got back from hospital - father in law carted off in an ambulance earlier this evening - they don't really know but he's stable and in ICU. Probability is that it is an infection that was exacerbated by a dye injection scan he had today... he's 88 years old so that's another dimension. More positive than negative though - he was on the ball enough to tell the mother in law to make sure she turned the electric blanket off :)
