well, if it works, it's an echidna (monotreme ... egg laying, has a pouch, one of those weird Aussie animals) ... kinda like the Australian version of the anteater. It was across the road from the shack, and I watched it, took pictures, took video, talked (for the video, not to the echidna!), and even touched it ... and it really just wasn't all that fussed. Far more interested in all the ants in the dead log it was ripping to pieces - little thing is solid muscle!
