Jamie's School Dinners

It was fascinating to watch yesterday. I have largely given up eating school dinners because all too often I would end up with something like pizza and chips. Our school does cook a variety of things, it's just ensuring they have some left when you get there. The other week I have a very nice chicken breast and sauce in pastry with some potatoes and veg. I had never seen the turkey twizzlers he was bemoaning and I suspect now I never will! I was also not surprised to see the impact cutting out sugar and highly processed foods etc had on the behaviour. Children who are often quite mellow for the first few lessons, after break, and even more after lunch, become really very crazy.

I can see that getting them eating well when they are young is the best way, which is why it's so worrying that a school I know doesn't do dinners at all. It is all packed lunches eaten in classrooms - surely that's no way to get them eating well?

Our school is getting there, but it has a way to go.
