Pope Benedict XVI does seem to be good at surprising people! I can understand his reasons for stepping down. A comment frequently heard in the last stages of John Paul II's papacy was "Why doesn't he step down? We can see how ill he is". Even if the Church chooses a Pope from outside Europe, the candidates they can choose from are all of an age (late 60's being the youngest, I think). Obviously my concern now is what will happen to his lovely secretary. Georg Ganswein may be nice to look at, and very capable, but if the new pope brings his own people, I don't know what his position will be. he is very much Ratzinger's man. Watch this space...
