Christianity was introduced here by David Livingstone (I presume) in the 19th century. The church grew rapidly and around 70% of the population regard themselves as Christian.

However, the first democratically elected president introduced measures to promote Islam and the structure of the membership of the current parliament is such that power is heavily weighted in one direction.

There is still freedom of religion in Malawi but because of the lack of representation for Christians, they find they are discriminated against.
