Less than 2% of the Lao population is Christian - a faith which is often seen as being an "American religion" and therefore an enemy of the state.
Christians are often detained and arrested on false charges. In one congregation of 2,000, two hundred men were arrested, the remainder of the church was intimidated until only 20 people were left who were brave enough to meet to pray.
