Christianity arrived in the area now known as Bangladesh in the 16th and 17th centuries and Protestant mission began in earnest with the arrival of William Carey in 1793.  Christians have a reputation for being active in social concern but make up less than 1% of the population. Officially there is religious freedom but the legal system apparently does not give safeguards to religious minorities.  In some areas Christians are under pressure to convert to one of the majority religions.
