Things about Advent which don't entirely enamour me...
1. Queuing for a couple of decades in the Post Office
2. Spending more money on posting the parcel than the present is worth
3. Being told that posting the parcels beyond the last date for Christmas means "they won't get there in time". "What? Not before 6 January?" I exclaim. "Huh? Whaddya mean, of course they'll get there by then." "Well, that's all right then. They'll still get there within the Christmas season." I refrain from telling them that Christmas is not just 25th... but no one seems to have any idea of the background to "The Twelve DAYS of Christmas"....
4. Everyone deciding on 18th December that they have 2 weeks' worth of translation to be completed by 23rd. Just do it, we don't care that you might have a weekend of festivities lined up. Ho-ho (Hum-hum).
5. Feeling stressed because I haven't had time to learn the words to the new carols for the Christmas Service and I've got 24 hours to do so (and produce 5 days' worth of advertising copy and sleep and eat - but go to the shop first)
6. Feeling even more stressed because I've invited people round for a soirée and now I've got such an avalanche of work to do I might just have to hand over the corkscrew to the first guest through the door and tell him/her to host it for me. I'll be at the computer if anyone needs me.
7. Wondering just when I might clean the house for said guests or get to the shops to buy in the festive nibbles and tipples
8. Carol singers who sing at the door but don't know the music or the words to the songs they are expecting me to fork out for. (And it's "We wish you a merry Christmas to you and your KIN"- not King. Gah.)
