Sugar and spice and all things nice

After a somewhat trying day, I escaped up the hill to do a quick spot of blackberrying. It was idyllic; hot air balloons were suspended over the breathless valley bathed in the golden light of the westering sun.

Back at home, the Lödgerin had prepared Kaffee und Kuchen - a cherry cake she had made herself. Not in the English fruit cake tradition but with a base made of ground hazelnuts and chocolate. I tend to avoid sugary foods as a rule but I shall inspect the recipe in more detail to investigate whether I could at least add this to my non-existent cake repertoire. It was delicious.

A dash to the shop to get some dried chilli flakes for my next blackberry recipe - a chutney this time. Then off to homegroup where we caught up with one another's news over a massive pot of chilli con carne - and a variety of very tempting looking desserts - washed down with Kerensa's homemade elderflower cordial.

I'm just off to make the chutney now. A report - and possibly the recipe - to follow.
