Tag der Deutschen Einheit

Today, what is left of it, is the Day of German Unity. It is the day Germans celebrate the unification of the two Germanies - an event which officially took place on 3 October 1990 - just 11 months after the Wall came down.

I confess I only remembered after I had sent various urgent e-mails to clients in Germany this morning. There was such a deafening silence that I thought my ISP had thrown a fit. Eventually I hit upon the idea of sending myself an e-mail from my hotmail account to my business account - just to reassure myself that I was still connected to the outside world. (No doubt someone who knows more about this techie stuff than I do will tell me it doesn't prove a thing...I guess I'll find that out tomorrow.)

Anyway, it then dawned on me that today is the Tag der Deutschen Einheit and that everyone was at home enjoying their day off. One client had obviously also forgotten about this event because she set a deadline of midday today for the return of some work. I had always suspected that these urgent deadlines are a work of fiction.....

Postcards from Nuremberg and Vienna are on their way....you know how unreliable the mail is these days.....
