Socking it to you

Yesterday I met someone who is the editor of a knitting magazine. During our truly fascinating conversation (it never ceases to intrigue me as to how other people earn their living), I learned that the bottom is falling out of the German sock market. (I'm sure there's a good pun in here somewhere dying to get out, darn it.) I'm now not entirely sure why this is. Is it because the Germans are pretty adept at knitting their own socks ? (I am the proud owner of a pair the Lödgerin knitted for me) or have they en masse abandoned the habit of wearing socks with their sandals - resulting in the sudden decline?

When I was in Nuremberg, I saw a sign which proudly announced "Socks - without elastic". I failed to see why this would be an advantage but I am no expert in this area and cannot be commended for my own contribution to the health of the sock market as I avoid most forms of footwear whenever possible.

You may be intrigued to know that I have since discovered that there is an on-line virtual Sock Museum which asserts it will be located in a real place in southern Germany "soon". Shall I add this to my "must-see" list?
