Conveniently, the meeting was on a Friday, so I took advantage of the weekend to stay at the Great Dane's and see something of his locality which is north of Copenhagen.
We made a quick visit to the National Museum in Copenhagen and visited an exhibition about Danish life over the centuries and also visited a museum of modern art - where there was very little to capture my imagination, I'm afraid.
We drove up the coast from the Great Dane's town and walked his excitable boxer on the beach from where I caught my first glimpse of Sweden across a ten-mile stretch of sea as a stunning sunset lit up the sky to the west. It began as a pale pink wisp and developed into a vibrant shimmering apricot sky with the black leafless trees silhouetted against it. We followed this with a drive down the coast road to Elsinore for a quick trot around the walls of Kronberg Castle, also known as Hamlet's castle. We didn't see any ghosts of murdered kings - just a light flashing in an upper window of the castle to the ships at sea. We went home for a magnificent meal of lemon and pesto roast chicken. I'm not sure if this is a Danish recipe - but I'm certainly adding it to my repertoire!
The Great Dane speaks fantastic English - he barely makes a single mistake - and so the whole weekend felt somewhat surreal - as if I had been in some sort of English bubble. I'm not sure how far I will get in learning to speak Danish; some of the vowel sounds are quite tricky. But regular readers will be delighted to know that my recently acquired Norwegian sentence "min blyant er blÄ" can also be used in Denmark. So that's saved a bit of work in the blue pencil department, then!
