There was much talk yesterday about an earthquake which had Market Rasen in Lincolnshire as its epicentre and which measured 5.2 on the Richter scale. It occurred at approximately 1 am on 27 February when most people were tucked up nice and cosy in their beds.

Yesterday evening at homegroup I was asked if I had felt the quake and I replied that I hadn't - but that there is a milk float which clatters and shakes its way down the street every night at about 1.30 am which rattles the windows.

Last night, I was lying in bed thinking of this conversation when I realised that actually, I HAD felt the quake. I had been sitting at my desk doing heaven knows what (although I see I sent a work e-mail at 1:07 am) when I felt the desk wobble. At first I thought I had the shakes (I sometimes feel a bit feak and weeble if I haven't eaten for a while) but realised that that was not the cause as my desk lamp was gently wobbling and the shadow it cast of my computer screen on the wall was also jumping. I couldn't understand what the cause was as it was too strong to be the general (weak) vibration of the computer, the heating had long since turned itself off and the fridge is too far away to have any effect on my desk. Ridiculous though these explanations may seem, that was the extent of the vibration - a sort of electrical judder of a machine starting up. It didn't last long - perhaps 10 to 30 seconds. I thought nothing more of it until 24 hours later when it dawned on me what had caused it.

Quite amazing really. Market Rasen must be a good 200 miles away. Had I been asleep, I wouldn't have noticed a thing.... and I know, I know, it took long enough for me to put two and two together....
