Don't know if this'll come out right, I asked it to dump out myspace code, but anyhow, pretty much spectaculary all wrong so make of it what you will...
However, didn't come on to chat about that, came on to chat about this:
Busy month, loads on, loads still to do, loads done, but weird to think that September is hurtling towards me and, yes you guessed it, that's going to be busy too. yay. Or something. Summer school at the arts centre was amazing though, excellent group, enjoyed every minute of the face to face work.
So what's the new newness? New in is that it's now pretty much confirmed that I'm organising doing the opening day of the Guildford Book Festival (in conjunction with the Big Draw nationwide initiative we're collaborating to make THE BIG BOOK DRAW 2! Wherein visitors will be allowed to come in and create the biggest book of the book fest alongside some seriously talented artists (oh yes, and me as well).
However, and, as exciting as that is for me because last years one was ace, more exciting for me is that I'm also a part of the festival on the writing side as well, having been booked into the Guildhall on October the 25th for an hour or so chat about 'Youthwork, artwork and the accidental author'... Pretty much unsure of exactly what'll be in it (planning it out now) but I know it will contain my bizarre birth story (that'll be fun), a summary of books 1 and 2, details of books 3 and 4 and a ten minute drawing lesson. Should be... something...
On a different note: last week was summer school at the arts centre and then straight onto summer school at Guildford. Dog tired, most days were 12 hour plus trying to keep things working, get things sorted etc. The weekend was supposed to be a quiet one but now I find we're visiting my dad today and the Watercress line tomorrow. I'll sleep soon I guess.
Anyhow, yesterday was at FISH and it went really well, bar a couple of kids in session 2 who were... a little hard to motivate. Was tricky, trying to keep a class going, and my classes are one of the safe list for the one to one helpers to bring some of the autistic/aspergers kids into to chill out as well, and look after the ones who were not wanting to take part. So, there I is, sort of asleep on my feet, trying to keep my attention in four different places at once, when the reluctant one comes up and asks me to draw something. So I did, thinking that that's the closest we've gotten to interaction so far, and then he asked me to sraw something else and then he ended up drawing through the break time while I sharpened pencils and we chatted about life and stuff. And that's when I found out some of his history and... well... stuff. So anyway, my FISH t-shirt gets drawn on by kids at the end of the third session and he was on the second but asked if he could and I said yes and he wrote something on the back of my shirt which was really touching and made me smile.
Sometimes, it works, youthwork. Sometimes it works when you're not expecting it to or not anticipating any connection or comment. Bless im, I hope things work out well for him and his friends.
