I cycled to work today... on the way home the canal I could see had a film of ice over it. Not just a few patches, but a film covering the entire canal. And we got a postcard from some friends in London, with penguins on, claiming it's colder down there. Ha, is all I have to say.

Yesterday I went for my first swimming lesson in, I estimate, 25 years. I am RUBBISH. I can swim fine, yes, I can get from one end of the pool to the other, multiple times. I swam 500m in the sea in 15 minutes once (OK, I was the last person who didn't need to be rescued, but I was fine).

But I can't swim properly - my strokes are incorrect, which means inefficient, bad for my joints, and slow. So I am learning how to do front crawl properly (involving turning my head to both sides, doing the arms right, and, gulping in a lot of water), and breast stroke ditto (involving using the bottoms of my feet to push, not the tops, and which takes me about five minutes to do half a length, while drowning).

I know how it feels to be five, and terrified of the water...
