They've moved it

Our holiday was spent in California, almost entirely going to places I've been to before (including San Diego, where I used to live, and Monterey, where my grandparents lived and where I spent at least 10 summers as a child, as well as a couple of more recent visits), as well as visiting friends (in Palo Alto - I know I've been briefly as a child) and relatives (in the greater LA area). We could have done with a detailled street map of all of these areas but we were travelling around so much that it would have taken about five books about four times the size of the London A-Z... and costing about $20 each.

We noticed a particular phenomenon, however, which is that whenever you go somewhere you were familiar with in former years, they have moved things. Roads, houses, buildings, in fact whole neighbourhoods have been moved. It's very tricky, navigating when none of the landmarks are where you left them.
