I went swimming after work today - partly because the counsellor suggested I might find it relaxing and partly because I wanted to try listening to the radio while swimming.
This is something I've been wanting to be able to do for a long time - listen to music while swimming. I found a cheap waterproof personal radio thing at the duty free in Amsterdam airport and I was very excited - so I tried it today.
Well, for the parts when I could hear the music, it was great! It's very satisfying to plough up and down the pool to the Beatles, but static is less fun. To start off with I clipped the radio to my suit, but although my grasp of physics has gone downhill since A level, I think water is probably not very good at conducting radio waves, and when the cord (which is also the aerial) went in the water the reception went to zero. But when I clipped it to my goggle headstrap, it was a bit better.
Now I have to decide if I can justify buying a waterproof MP3 player so that I can actually listen to music all the time rather than just in fits and starts... it would be nice not to have to listen to the screaming kids!
