Health and Safety

Lovely evening last night. It was really good to see our friends again, and especially as they were seeming so happy and unstressed by work, life etc. And it was really easy to talk to them about adoption things. We feel encouraged.

However, I could have really ruined the evening... you are allowed to laugh, because it all came out ok in the end.

They had just had their bathroom light switch changed -- three times. The first switch didn't pass the health and safety assessment of their adoption home study. So they contacted their electrician who recommended a dimmer switch to be put in (they have those lovely hallogen lights sunk into the bathroom ceiling). The adoption agency still wasn't happy with this for health and safety. So they had that second switch removed and had a pull cord put in. Finally the adoption agency, the electrician and our friends were all happy. But after all of the fuss, it was a relief for them to have it finished.

We have a pull cord in our bathroom. You click it once to turn it on and click it again to turn it off. Simple really.

So last night I used their loo and oo-ed and ah-ed over their bathroom light switch. However when I went to turn it off, it wouldn't click off. I pulled again, no click. So I called down the stairs to my friend "How do I turn it off?". She said "Just give it a sharp tug." Before her husband could say "No, Don't!", I was standing with the cord in my hand and it was no longer attached to the light.

Somebody just dig a hole for me to climb into please!!!

She was so nice about it, but her husband did spend the next hour and a half fixing it with all the the electricity off. They kept amazingly good humour, considering. Oh I felt awful. But I was so glad that I was around to see it fixed again by the time we left at the end of the evening. We offered to pay their electrician, but it turned out to be DIY-able. Oh how embarassing.

Makes me wonder what things the agency will single out as needing to be changed in our house??
