There and back to see how far it is

Well, that's the response I got from my parents when I whined "Where are we gooo-iiing?" at them. But now I can actually say I've achieved this feat.

A couple of weeks ago, my aunt came down to visit me. For the last few years, we've been trying to find a sunny day when she was down, so we could take the Heart of Wales line up from Swansea through the mountains in mid-Wales and on to Shrewsbury. But, good days are hard to find in Swansea, so we've never yet made it. Until this time...

So, the plan seemed really quite sensible, for me. We would take a packed lunch, enjoy the journey up there, spend a couple of hours in Shrewsbury, and then head back. This would have worked fine, if it hadn't been for the wonders of the rail enquiry system - which gave us the wrong times. Having missed the morning train, we were faced with the choice of either waiting another 5 years for a sunny day ;) or going anyway.

It's a very pretty route, and we enjoyed the scenery, but I'm not entirely sure the 17 minutes in Shrewsbury was worth it. Still, it's more than my aunt managed - she stayed on the train in the warm.

So, for any kids out there, if your parents tell you you're going there and back to see how far it is, I suggest you start whining then!
