Well, inspired by some of the Australian wibloggers, Lemly and I had a go at making Anzac biscuits the other night. I sometimes think we shouldn't ever be left alone in a kitchen together - sometimes we have fanastic successes and sometimes total disasters. I think it's probably fair to say that these came into the latter camp.
So armed with a recipe from the net ("The fun-looking one" as Lemly put it), it should all have been so easy. The first challenge, however, was to figure out how big an Australian 'cup' is, compared with an American one, or a British one. And then discovering that a tablespoon also varies in size confused us slightly, but we were doing pretty well.
The next instruction was to add baking soda and water to a mix of melted butter and golden syrup. This gave us a small dilemma - is baking soda a)baking powder or b)bicarbonate of soda? We plumped for b, and were rewarded with a saucepan that temporarily resembled a volcano, spewing foamy stuff all over the cooker. Fun! Adding the remaining quantity of mixture to the dry ingredients meant that the next instruction ('Mix and shape into biscuits') was then a little on the difficult side, as we ended up with something that more closely resembled crumble topping! So, we added a bit more butter, a bit more golden syrup, a bit more butter...you get the picture.
The biscuits looked pretty good when we got them out of the oven, but the distinct taste of bicarb of soda seemed to overpower any other flavour. Still, they went down pretty well at a friend's house last night, after a few drinks. Ho hum!
