I have now been told the reason for the octopus on the tree - apparently my great aunt sent it to me as a Christmas present when I was about 2 and my parents felt it "wasn't suitable" as I might have been able to pull the wool out and eat it (?!) so they put it on the Christmas tree instead and it has been there ever since (25 years).
Hmmm.
