Others have said things so much better. I may not have the words to type, but I have the memories. I knew Mike not only as a good friend, but also as a work colleague, having worked for the same firm as him before he left for India. He genuinely was one of the best and most genuine people I've ever had the privilege to meet.
My brain is whizzing with thoughts, but one of the strongest memories coming to the fore is walking home with him after we'd been out in the pub on a Friday evening, post-work. I'd stopped working for the company a few months earlier, but was (and am) still in the habit of socialising with them. Part way home, Mike asked "Can I tell you something - and you can't tell any of the rest of them yet?" He then proceeded to spend the rest of the way home telling me about having just been accepted to go to India, his plans and hopes for what he would be able to do, and how excited he was about it all. I guess that's what I'm hanging onto right now - that memory of his joy and excitement about going to people he cared about to make a difference in their lives.
I don't think there's any doubt that he has made a difference in people's lives - and not just those in India.
Rest in peace Mike.
