Hugely ironic trauma narrowly averted

Or: why I'm really really glad my mobile phone was switched off this afternoon.

The window man finally came, and I now have a shiny new window (hooray!) (well, that's to say, shiny except for the glass man's fingerprints which are still all over it). So I was in a very good mood this afternoon for obvious reasons. I came home this evening, had a quick look and it was still there and all was right with the world. I started to prepare my tea (which included half a ton of lettuce which was in my organic veg box yesterday, so if I don't lose any weight by tomorrow I shall be most miffed) and then thought to get my phone out of my bag, where I realised it was switched off. As I switched it on it beeped at me, and the voicemail message turned out to come from my neighbour (the same one who discovered my burglary) telling me that my burglar alarm was going off, he'd had a quick look round but couldn't see anything broken or amiss, but thought I'd better know. Can you imagine my panic if I'd actually taken the call? And can you imagine the irony if I'd been broken into again the day the window was finally fixed?

Anyway, I had another look round and everything was fine. The only thing I can possibly think of that could have set the alarm off was that the free newspaper was halfway down the hall, and I wonder if the paper boy shoved it in the letter box with such force that it flew across the floor and got picked up by the sensors? Which let's face it is rather amusing.

In other news, it looks like the research proposal is finally there. Tutor's comments on my latest draft: "I think this is GREAT! I wouldn't change a thing....I'll keep my fingers tightly crossed - I would be really keen to work on this with you."

So no pressure now then (eeeeek). I have every intention of pointing out to her that I hope it's their 2nd best application (see blog entry passim, last month I think) - the thought of having to go through all this again later in the year to get interviewed by the ESRC (and especially to get another reference out of the OU) is just too much!
